Bihar rain tragedy: Farmer killed in lightning strike in Nawada amid changing weather conditions
A farmer died after being struck by lightning in Bihar’s Nawada district on Friday amid changing weather conditions and increasing thunderstorm activity across several parts of the state, officials said.
According to local authorities, the incident occurred during adverse weather conditions when lightning struck the victim while he was reportedly engaged in agricultural-related work in the area. The farmer suffered critical injuries in the incident and died shortly afterward.
Police and local administration officials reached the spot after receiving information about the incident. The body was later sent for further legal formalities as authorities began documenting the case.
The latest death comes as several regions across Bihar and neighbouring states continue to witness sudden thunderstorms, gusty winds and lightning activity due to changing weather patterns linked to western disturbances and pre-monsoon conditions.
Lightning-related deaths remain a recurring concern in Bihar during the summer and monsoon transition period. The state has recorded multiple fatalities over the years due to cloud-to-ground lightning strikes, particularly in rural and agricultural areas where farmers often remain outdoors during sudden weather changes.
The Bihar government and disaster management authorities have repeatedly issued advisories asking people to avoid open fields, trees and water bodies during thunderstorms. Residents are also advised to immediately seek shelter inside concrete structures whenever lightning activity intensifies.
Weather experts say eastern Indian states, including Bihar, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh, remain highly vulnerable to lightning incidents during periods of unstable atmospheric activity. Authorities have been urging district administrations to spread awareness in rural areas, where most lightning-related casualties are reported every year.
The incident in Nawada has once again highlighted the risks faced by farmers and outdoor workers during rapidly changing weather conditions, especially as thunderstorms and rainfall activity are expected to continue in parts of eastern India over the coming days.
Further details regarding compensation or official relief measures were awaited at the time of publication.
