A spokesperson for the foundation told Bloomberg that the donation was part of a $12.5 billion financial settlement between Bill and Melinda Gates, which has now been fully completed. In 2024, Pivotal Philanthropies distributed $875 million to various charitable causes. Melinda decided to formally part ways with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in May 2024. The couple divorced in 2021. A year later, in late 2022, Melinda founded the Pivotal Philanthropies Foundation.
