Billionaire Jeff Bezos launches New Glenn rocket, uses 50 year old launch pad
New Delhi : Blue Origin, the space company of billionaire Jeff Bezos, founder of e-commerce company Amazon, successfully tested the New Glenn rocket on Thursday. The rocket was launched from the US state of Florida at 2 am local time.
Succeed in first attempt
Rocket has achieved this success in its first attempt itself. Earlier its launch was postponed. A prototype satellite was placed in orbit by the rocket. It completed its mission just 13 minutes after launch. The length of this huge rocket is 98 meters. It has been designed to take astronauts to the moon.
50 year old launch pad
The rocket has 7 engines. All engines continued to run for more than 3 minutes before the rocket's first stage separated. The rocket was launched from the same launch pad from which the Mariner and Pioneer spacecraft were launched 50 years ago.
Jeff Bezos apologized
Apart from rocket launch, there was a plan to land its booster safely in the sea. However, the booster could not land at its designated place. Jeff Bezos also apologized for this.
designed for reuse
These boosters are designed to be reused. It has been designed on the lines of SpaceX's Falcon rocket, so that the cost of future missions can be reduced. The booster was to land on a platform named Jacqueline in the ocean. Bezos named this platform after his mother. During landing, live data from the rocket was cut off even before the booster engine started.
Mars mission will use rocket
The New Glenn rocket may complete its first official mission this year. American space agency NASA wants to launch two orbiters on Mars this year. For this, NASA wants to use Blue Origin's rocket. Blue Origin also has several commercial missions. These also include missions related to launching Amazon's Internet satellite. Blue Origin hopes that this rocket will be capable of carrying satellites weighing up to 3000 kg.
