The real power of diplomacy is seen not in handshakes, formal welcomes or shared photographs, but in the trust that a nation publicly professes through its highest honor. Prime Minister Narendra Modi being honored with Indonesia’s highest civilian honor ‘Bintang Adipurna’ in Jakarta was one such historic moment. The salute of fighter jets and the warm welcome of President Prabowo Subianto made it clear that India-Indonesia relations are no longer limited to shared cultural heritage. This honor symbolizes the new partnership of strategic trust, shared future and regional responsibilities between the two countries. The age-old friendship is now emerging stronger on new grounds like defence, digital technology, maritime security and economic cooperation.
As soon as Prime Minister Narendra Modi accepted ‘Bintang Adipurna’, he named it in the name of 140 crore Indians. This was also the biggest meaning of that honour. In independent India, he is the second Indian Prime Minister after Jawaharlal Nehru (posthumously in 1995) to receive this honour. Established in 1959, this decoration is given to those personalities who have made a significant contribution to the unity, stability and prosperity of Indonesia. Being honored with this award by a foreign leader is a testament to India’s growing global prestige, credible leadership and the deepening strategic trust between the two countries. This reciprocating visit after President Prabowo Subianto’s visit to India on Republic Day 2025 also makes it clear that India-Indonesia relations have now transformed into a strategic partnership that delivers results and not just formal diplomacy.
The biggest achievement of this visit was defense cooperation, which gave a new strategic height to India-Indonesia relations. Defense sector was the most important among the 16 agreements signed between the two countries. The purchase of additional batteries of BrahMos supersonic cruise missile, the agreement related to Astra Beyond Visual Range air-to-air missile and the possibilities of joint production proved that India is no longer just an arms importer but a reliable defense technology partner.
From a strategic point of view, the joint development of Sabang Port is one of the most far-reaching achievements of this visit. Located near the Strait of Malacca, this port is an important hub of global maritime trade and its proximity to the Great Nicobar Project makes it more important for India. This will strengthen the capabilities of both the countries in maritime security, disaster management, shipping and trade logistics. At the same time, agreement on investment in critical minerals like nickel, steel and rare earth magnets is a decisive step for the future industrial economy. This partnership between Indonesia, the world’s largest nickel producer, and India, which is rapidly growing in the EV and renewable energy sector, can become an effective alternative to the China-dependent supply chain. This cooperation will also lay a strong foundation for energy security and industrial self-reliance.
This partnership becomes all the more important in the current global circumstances. The Indo-Pacific is today a major center of strategic competition and growing geopolitical tension. In such a time, the joint determination of India and Indonesia towards a free, open and prosperous Indo-Pacific gives a positive message of stability to the entire region. Agreements related to defense cooperation, maritime security, humanitarian assistance, disaster management and regional stability provide a solid foundation to this vision. This visit will also prove important in making the bilateral trade of approximately $24 billion more balanced and comprehensive. The agreements strengthening economic cooperation, investment and supply chains also strengthen the prospects for balanced and sustainable growth in Asia with new opportunities for both countries.
This visit is not only a successful diplomatic visit, but also a decisive milestone in giving a new direction to India’s ‘Act East’ policy and ‘Ocean’ vision. The historic ties rooted in Ramayana, Prambanan Temple and shared cultural heritage are now transforming into a modern partnership of defense technology, digital infrastructure, maritime cooperation and economic resilience. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Prabowo Subianto proved that visionary diplomacy not only solves the challenges of the present but also lays a strong foundation for future possibilities. This partnership has the potential to take both the countries to new heights not only in Asia but also on the global stage.
