Bird flu hits Bihar: More than 4,500 chickens sacrificed, Patna Zoo closed till March 7
After the confirmation of bird flu cases in Bihar’s capital Patna, the state government and district administration have come into alert mode. An investigation was conducted after the sudden deaths of crows and chickens in Patna’s PC Colony, Zoo Sector Park in Kankarbagh and Patna High Court premises.
H5N1 virus of bird flu confirmed in report
Samples of these birds were sent to the lab in Bhopal for testing, from where the report confirmed the H5N1 virus of bird flu. After this the administration immediately started implementing security measures in the affected areas. To prevent the spread of the infection, the administration has declared a radius of one kilometer of the affected area as infected area.
As a precautionary measure, about 4,575 chickens were destroyed, while 9,662 eggs and about 530 kg of poultry feed were also destroyed. Apart from this, pesticides and sanitizers have been sprayed in the entire area, so that the spread of the virus can be stopped. The administration has appealed to the local people to exercise caution and not pay attention to any kind of rumours.
Patna zoo administration took vigilance
Taking extra precaution, Patna Zoo administration has also sent water, soil, blood and other samples from the zoo premises to Bhopal for testing. Till the report comes, special monitoring is being kept in the bird section of the zoo. A team of veterinarians is constantly checking the health of the birds and the entire premises is being sanitized. In view of the danger of infection, it has been decided to keep Patna Zoo closed till March 7, so that the situation can be completely controlled.
Bird flu is a viral infection, which spreads mainly through contact with infected birds. The risk of infection increases if a person touches an infected bird or comes in contact with its saliva, feces or other fluids. Apart from this, the virus can spread in the air due to flapping of wings or sneezing of infected birds, which can reach humans through breath.
Symptoms in a person infected with bird flu
A person infected with bird flu may show symptoms like high fever, cough, sore throat, body ache and difficulty in breathing. The Health Department has advised people to be alert, maintain distance from dead birds and immediately inform the administration in case of any suspicious situation.
