BJD suspended its six MLAs, what were the charges against them?

Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has slammed six MLAs who cross-voted in the Rajya Sabha elections. Everyone has been suspended with immediate effect for being involved in anti-party activities. In the letter issued, the party said that by cross-voting and anti-party activities, the MLAs have violated the basic principle of the BJD constitution, in which it is mandatory to have collective loyalty to the party’s decision.

 

Rajya Sabha elections were held in Odisha on 16 March. In this, BJD MLAs did cross voting. After this, the party’s Chief Whip issued show cause notices to all the six MLAs. The party’s disciplinary committee reviewed the replies received from the MLAs. On March 21, BJD’s Political Affairs Committee decided to suspend all six MLAs with immediate effect.

The party has taken action against MLA Chakramani Kanhar from Baliguda, Naba Kishore Mallik from Jaydev, Souvik Biswal from Chaudwar-Cuttack, Subashini Jena from Basta, Ramakant Bhoi from Tirtol and Devi Ranjan Tripathi from Banki. The party had issued show cause notices to all the MLAs on March 17. BJD Chief Whip Pramila Mallik said that their answers were not satisfactory. The decision to suspend all the MLAs was taken in the meeting of the Political Affairs Committee chaired by former CM Naveen Patnaik on Saturday.

BJP got 11 more votes

On March 16, elections were held for four Rajya Sabha seats in Odisha. BJP won two seats. An independent candidate supported by BJP won one seat. BJD got one seat. The total number of BJP and its independent MLAs in the assembly is 82. But he got 93 first preference votes. Overall BJP got 11 more votes. It is being told that eight of these votes are from BJD and three from Congress MLAs.
