As the election bugle sounds in West Bengal, the political climate for administrative reshuffle is at its peak. On Monday, in Rajya Sabha, the upper house of Parliament, there was a ruckus when Trinamool Congress members protested against the Election Commission’s action. The Trinamool Congress termed the commission’s decision to remove state chief secretary Nandini Chakraborty and home secretary Jagdish Prasad Meena from their posts as “arbitrary” and an “attack on democracy” by the central government. As the zero hour proceedings began in the Rajya Sabha, Trinamool Congress MP Derek O’Brien raised the issue of transfers of top officials. He alleged that such action taken late at night so soon after the announcement of the election dates amounts to obstructing the fair election process.
Trinamool Congress MPs said the move was aimed at destabilizing the state’s administrative machinery. In protest, all Trinamool Congress members staged a day-long walkout from the House.
