BJP created history in Kerala: Party candidate VV Rajesh elected mayor of Thiruvananthapuram, Left’s fort collapsed
Thiruvananthapuram, 26 December. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) created history in Kerala on Friday when its candidate VV Rajesh won the Thiruvananthapuram mayor election. Rajesh’s election signals a new chapter for the BJP in Kerala’s urban politics while CPIM’s 45-year-old empire has come to an end.
Rajesh got 51 votes, one more than the majority.
VV Rajesh got 51 votes in the voting held today, which is one more than the majority in the 100-member Municipal Corporation. CPIM’s RP Shivaji got 29 votes and Congress-led UDF’s KS Sabarinathan got 19 votes. One councilor did not participate in the voting. BJP’s victory was possible with the support of another independent councillor, P Radhakrishnan.
Thiruvananthapuram will be made a developed city – Rajesh
In his first address after assuming office, VV Rajesh said, ‘We will all move forward together, taking everyone along.’ He said that development work will be implemented in all the 101 wards of Thiruvananthapuram and Thiruvananthapuram will be made a developed city. In fact, VV Rajesh has become the mayor at a time when less than six months are left for the state assembly elections.
BJP’s target in the impregnable fortress of Left
It is noteworthy that Kerala is one of the few states in the country where BJP has been struggling for a long time, but has so far failed to penetrate this impenetrable fort of the Left. The party has so far had only one MLA in Kerala, whose name is O Rajagopal. He had won the Nemom seat in 2016. The state also has a BJP MP, actor Suresh Gopi, who won the Thrissur seat in 2024.
After the function, Kerala BJP chief Rajiv Chandrasekhar told reporters that the CPIM has ruined Thiruvananthapuram with the indirect or behind-the-scenes support of the Congress.
