During the last Lok Sabha elections, the BJP’s election expenditure rose from ₹792.39 crore in 2018-2019 to ₹1,352.92 crore in 2019-2020. The Election Commission announced the 2024 elections on March 16, so campaigning began in the 2023-2024 financial year itself. A total of 44 days of voting were held from April 19 to June 1, 2024. In the pre-election year, 2023-24, Rs 1,754.06 crore was spent on election and general campaigning.

At the same time, the total expenditure in the two years preceding the formation of the 18th Lok Sabha and the eight Vidhan Sabhas (election year and pre-election year) was Rs 5,089.42 crore, which is double the total expenditure of Rs 2,145.31 crore in the two years preceding the formation of the 17th Lok Sabha and the seven Vidhan Sabhas (election year and pre-election year).
