BJP gains momentum over women’s reservation in Parliament, issues whip

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has issued a whip to its MPs to compulsorily attend the special meeting of Parliament from April 16 to 18. In this meeting, preparations are being made to work rapidly to give 33 percent reservation to women in Lok Sabha and Assemblies. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has sought support from all political parties to implement this quota.

‘Nari Shakti Vandan Act’ has been passed in 2023 but this reservation will be implemented only after census and delimitation. On Wednesday, the Union Cabinet approved the introduction of two bills in a special meeting. There is a provision to implement reservation and form a new Delimitation Commission before the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.

The whip is very hard

BJP’s three-line whip is very strict. It says that no leave will be given. All members will have to remain present in the House without stopping.

On Saturday, Prime Minister Modi wrote a letter to all the parties. He appealed for ‘collective action’ so that women’s reservation is implemented in the 2029 Lok Sabha and Assembly elections. Modi wrote, ‘There is going to be a historic discussion on the Nari Shakti Vandan Act in the Parliament from 16th April. This special meeting is an opportunity to further strengthen our democracy.

What did Modi say?

Modi said that women’s political participation is very important for the long-term progress of India. ‘Any society progresses only when women get the opportunity to move forward, take decisions and lead.’ He mentioned the success of women in every field from space to sports, army to startups.

The Prime Minister reminded that this law was passed almost unanimously in 2023. All the parties were united. Now the time has come that it should be truly implemented in the entire country. He appealed to all parties to rise above parties and show responsibility towards women and future generations. Modi is confident that Parliament will complete this historic task with one voice.

Congress raised questions

Meanwhile, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge raised questions on the timing of this special meeting. He wrote a letter to Modi saying that it has been 30 months since the law was passed but now a meeting was called without talking to him. Kharge said that it is difficult to have a useful discussion without giving any details of delimitation. He demanded a meeting of all parties after April 29, when the state elections are over.

The government says that this is a big step to increase women’s participation. All members will actively participate in the debate in the special meeting. This will further advance the strong tradition of democracy.
