Barhet assembly seat is considered one of the most important and VVIP seats of Jharkhand, especially because Chief Minister Hemant Soren himself contests from here. The seat has been dominated by the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) for a long time, making it an important stronghold of their party. This time BJP has made Gamaliel Hembram its candidate, who is a former teacher by profession and entered politics five years ago. His wife is also a public representative, who is a symbol of new hope for the BJP on this seat.

Who is Gamaliel Hembram

The historical perspective of Barhait seat shows that candidates from many parties have won here. Babulal Tudu of Jharkhand Party won from 1957 to 1962 and Masih Soren as an independent won in 1967 and 1972. In 1977, Parmeshwar Hembram of the Janata Party and in 1980 and 1985, Thomas Hansda of the Congress won. Later, JMM's Hemlal Murmu won four times in 1990, 1995, 2000 and 2009. Then in 2014 and 2019, Hemant Soren won this seat. Thus, this seat is considered an impenetrable fort of JMM and it will be challenging for BJP to win it.
