BJP lost badly in Punjab, forfeited deposits on 1142 seats, then why is it celebrating?

The Bharatiya Janata Party, which is dreaming of forming a government in Punjab after West Bengal, has suffered a major setback in the results of the Punjab municipal elections. In these elections, votes were cast on a total of 1977 seats. These included 8 municipal corporations, 75 city councils and 20 nagar panchayats. Most of the parties had fielded candidates on their party symbols and the result was in favor of Aam Aadmi Party. BJP has lost in these elections but still the party is celebrating in Punjab. What has the party achieved that it is celebrating even after the defeat?

  • AAP – 958
  • Congress – 397
  • Others – 251
  • Akali Dal – 192
  • BJP – 172

Performed well at these places

The deposits of 1142 BJP candidates have been forfeited in these elections. BJP is still calling it a victory because of its past track record and hope for the future. The party has performed brilliantly in Pathankot and has established itself in place of Congress. This is a big fort of BJP in Punjab. BJP has a strong hold in this Hindu dominated area and the working president of the party is the MLA from this area.

BJP has performed well in Rajpura. Apart from this, BJP has emerged as the largest party in Abohar. Former BJP President Sunil Jakhar is from Abohar and he has thanked the public on these results. BJP has captured 27 seats in Abohar. BJP has also performed well in Fazilka where the party has got 11 seats and has become the largest party.

Why is BJP happy?

BJP has not yet become a major political force in Punjab. BJP has crossed the number of 150 in these elections. Party’s social media chief Amit Malviya, while sharing the figures on social media, wrote that AAP is left below 1000 seats and BJP is going to make its own mayors and chairmen in many places. He shared election trends of the last decade.

The alliance of BJP and Akali Dal had won a bumper victory in the 2015 local body elections, but the party was badly defeated in the elections held thereafter.

  • SAD : 1060
  • BJP : 360
  • Congress : 356
  • Others : 400+

In 2021, the Congress party got a bumper majority, but in the assembly elections held a year later, there was a wave of Aam Aadmi Party and the Congress was almost wiped out.

  • Congress : 1432
  • SAD : 284
  • BJP : 59
  • AAP: 69
  • Independents : 364

Aam Aadmi Party could not win more than 1000 seats in 2026 and BJP is calling it a defeat for the party. Amit Malviya said 63 AAP candidates had won unopposed as the opposition’s nominations were cancelled. Along with this, there were also allegations of misuse of police. BJP had won 59 seats in the elections held five years ago and this time BJP has crossed 170. BJP is considering this as a good performance. BJP leaders are thanking the public and saying that the party is going to form the government in the state in 2027.
