BJP Releases First Candidate List for Bengal Polls, Suvendu Adhikari to Face Mamata Banerjee

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) released its first list of candidates for the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections, setting up a high-stakes contest between Suvendu Adhikari and Mamata Banerjee.

The announcement has electrified Bengal’s political landscape. BJP confirmed that Suvendu Adhikari, Leader of the Opposition in the state Assembly, will contest against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in her stronghold Bhowanipore. Adhikari will also contest from Nandigram, where he defeated Banerjee in 2021 by around 2,000 votes.

In 2021, Mamata Banerjee later secured victory in the Bhowanipore bye-election after losing Nandigram. The Trinamool Congress had fielded Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay from Bhowanipore in the general elections, and he won the seat before vacating it for Banerjee’s return.

The BJP’s first list includes 144 candidates, marking the beginning of its campaign strategy. Noted actor and BJP leader Rudranil Ghosh will contest from Shibpur constituency. The announcement coincided with CPI(M) releasing its first batch of candidates, signalling the start of a multi-cornered battle in Bengal.

The Adhikari vs Mamata clash promises to be one of the most closely watched contests of the election. Both leaders carry the weight of their 2021 showdown, and their renewed rivalry in Bhowanipore and Nandigram sets the stage for a dramatic electoral battle.
