It is noteworthy that voting was held for 9,200 seats of 15 municipal corporations, 84 municipalities, 34 district panchayats and 260 taluka panchayats in the state, in which more than 4.18 crore eligible voters participated. Among urban bodies, newly formed Gandhidham Municipal Corporation recorded the lowest turnout at 46.03 per cent while Vapi recorded the highest turnout at 72.29 per cent. 51.81 percent voting took place in Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation.
Among rural areas, Narmada district recorded the highest turnout of 84.49 percent, while Porbandar District Panchayat recorded the lowest turnout of 50.80 percent. Voting was largely peaceful and no major untoward incidents occurred.
However, re-polling was conducted in a village in Surendranagar district after it was canceled due to a technical glitch in the electronic voting machine (EVM). These elections were held under the revised norms of Other Backward Class (OBC) reservation, which led to delimitation and ward reorganization in many districts.
Voting was held for the first time in nine newly formed municipal corporations including Navsari, Gandhidham, Morbi, Vapi, Anand, Nadiad, Mehsana, Porbandar and Surendranagar. BJP, Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) are the major contenders, with AIMIM, NCP and independent candidates also in the fray.
Prominent candidates include former IPS officer M.L. Ninama, former radio jockey Abha Desai and former AAP MLA Bhupendra Bhayani. In 2021, the BJP had won a landslide victory in the local elections and won 6,236 out of 8,470 seats in various bodies.
