BJP’s Ritu Tawde elected BMC mayor, Shiv Sena’s Sanjay Ghadi elected deputy mayor
Senior BJP councilor Ritu Tawde has been elected unopposed as the new mayor of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). After almost four decades, such an occasion has come when BJP has captured this post. Shiv Sena (UBT) decided not to field a candidate for the post of Mayor, due to which the election was conducted without a contest.
Thackeray family’s 25 years of dominance ends
With this development, the Thackeray family’s dominance over the Mumbai Municipal Corporation for nearly 25 years ended. At the same time, Sanjay Ghadi of Shiv Sena has been elected Deputy Mayor. 53-year-old Ritu Tawde has been a councilor from Ghatkopar West region three times. He is known for his long experience in local politics, city administration and issues related to public interest. According to senior party leaders, Tawde is an active leader at the grassroots level, who has a direct and strong hold on the common citizens. Due to his understanding of administrative work and regional contacts, he has created a distinct identity.
Tawde entered BMC for the first time in 2012 by winning the elections from Ward 127. After this, in 2017 he again won from Ward 121 of Ghatkopar. In the recent elections held on January 15, he further strengthened his political position by winning from Ward 132. His consecutive victories in the country’s most prosperous municipal body are being considered an important achievement for the BJP.
What did Devendra Fadnavis say about Ritu Tawde?
Along with working as a councilor, Tawde has also served as the chairperson of the education committee of BMC. During this period, he made efforts to improve the city schools and education related systems. Congratulating her, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that Ritu Tawde is an experienced public representative and has a deep understanding of the administrative system. He expressed confidence that the Municipal Corporation will do better work under his leadership.
In the 227-member BMC, BJP emerged as the largest party with 89 seats. Its ally Shiv Sena won 29 seats, taking the total strength of the Mahayuti alliance to 118 councilors and ensuring victory on the mayor’s post. On the other hand, Shiv Sena (UBT) secured 65 seats, while Maharashtra Navnirman Sena got 6 and Sharad Pawar faction’s NCP got 1 seat.
