BJP’s victory in Maharashtra local elections will affect opposition and allies, Shinde’s concerns may increase

Mahayuti’s victory in Maharashtra: Election results and impact

New Delhi . In the recently held local body elections in Maharashtra, the alliance of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Shiv Sena and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) won 75 percent of the seats. Mahayuti won the post of president in 215 out of 288 bodies. This is BJP’s second consecutive successful electoral performance after the assembly elections, in which the party has captured 129 president’s chairs. This victory could have significant implications not only for the opposition but also for BJP’s allies.

Election process and results

Voting for 286 nagar panchayats and municipal councils in Maharashtra was held in two phases, with voting taking place on December 2 and December 20. 246 Municipal Councils and 42 Nagar Panchayats are included in this election. In the first phase, 67 percent voters cast their votes for 263 bodies and in the second phase, 47 percent voters cast their votes for 23 bodies. The counting of votes began on Sunday morning and by late evening the grand alliance of BJP, Shiv Sena and NCP (Ajit Pawar) had won 215 presidential posts. BJP has won 129, Shiv Sena 51 and NCP 35 president posts.

conflict within the grand alliance

‘Friendly fight’ was also seen in many areas between the constituent parties of Mahayuti, BJP, Shiv Sena and NCP. At some places these parties fielded their candidates and competed. For example, in Kankavli, Dahanu and Palghar, Shiv Sena defeated BJP, while in Loha, NCP defeated the BJP candidate. The name of the elected president of NCP here is Sharad Pawar. On the other hand, BJP registered victory over Shiv Sena in Vadnagar.

Results for BJP and allies

BJP campaigned in local elections like Lok Sabha or Assembly elections. This is being considered as an opportunity which has given the party a chance to know whether it is moving towards its goal of ‘100 percent BJP’ or not. Some analysts believe that this could be an important sign for the political future of the BJP, where the party will not feel the need of its allies.

opposition position

After the defeat in the assembly elections, the opposition’s position in the local elections may deteriorate further. Especially before the next elections of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, this challenge has increased even more. Shiv Sena (UBT) has been trying to maintain its influence for three decades, but its seats in local elections have not even touched double figures.

Chief Minister’s statement

Maharashtra Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis said that this victory is the result of joint efforts of both the organization and the government. He talked about contesting the elections on the issue of development and said that he never criticized any other leader or party in his campaign. Fadnavis campaigned based on a positive development agenda and based his actions and future plans on public support.
