Ben Stokes narrowly escaped, ICC did not impose any penalty, what was the crime after all?
Ben Stokes: England Cricket Board (ECB) has got a big relief in the case of Ben Stokes’ retirement video. The International Cricket Council (ICC) has decided not to take any action against the ECB in this matter. According to the report, after talks between ICC and ECB, this matter ended with mutual consent.
The controversy started when a video recorded in the England dressing room during the third Test match against New Zealand was released on social media. In this video, Ben Stokes was telling his teammates that he has decided to step away from captaincy and international cricket after the current Test series.
ICC had expressed concern about the rules
This video of Ben Stokes was shared on social media during the match itself and was also shared with broadcasters. After this the ICC had sought a reply from the ECB on this matter. The ICC was concerned that the video could violate rules governing players’ and match officials’ areas of play (PMOA).
The matter ended after talks
The purpose of these rules is to maintain transparency in cricket and strengthen the anti-corruption system. According to the rules, recordings from private areas like dressing rooms cannot be broadcast before the end of the match. After receiving the response from the ECB, the ICC took no further action and the case ended without any punishment. However, both the institutions did not issue any official statement regarding this decision. Later Ben Stokes told that the timing of the retirement announcement was decided in collaboration with his management team and the ECB. This video definitely attracted a lot of discussion, but in the end the England Board was saved from any action.
