Black Panther 3 is finally returning, with David Jonsson announced as T’Challa’s son and the new Black Panther.
On Saturday, July 25, Ryan Coogler revealed during Marvel’s Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con that the 32-year-old English actor has officially joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the new Black Panther for the franchise’s third installment.
Coogler, who directed the first two Black Panther movies in 2018 and 2022, is back to helm the upcoming film and confirmed Jonsson’s casting as T’Challa’s adult son.
The news comes after Chadwick Boseman, who played T’Challa in the first instalment, passed away at the age of 43 in 2020 while the Oscar-winning filmmaker was working on the follow-up film.
After Boseman’s sudden and tragic death, Coogler revised the screenplay, shifting the story’s focus to T’Challa’s sister Shuri, played by Letitia Wright, with her eventually becoming the new Black Panther in the sequel.
Wright is expected to reprise her role as Shuri in the upcoming Black Panther film.
Fans’ reactions
Shortly after the major announcement of Jonsson joining the MCU as the new Black Panther, fans could not stop sharing their excitement over the casting.
“Incredible casting choice!! He’s going to absolutely crush it,” one user wrote on Instagram.
Another added, “Guy is a phenomenal talent. Fantastic choice,” while a third expressed, “Wish Chadwick could see the torch being passed.”
“WOW WOW IM SO EXCITED!!” a fourth fan exclaimed.
When is Black Panther 3 releasing?
Black Panther 3led by David Jonsson, is scheduled for a theatrical release on December 15, 2028.
