Kane Williamson created history for New Zealand, made this record by defeating Ross Taylor

Former New Zealand captain Kane Williamson on Sunday (September 22) broke former captain Ross Taylor's record of 18,199 runs. Now Williamson has become the highest run scorer in international cricket for New Zealand. The 34-year-old right-handed batsman needed 72 runs to break Taylor's record in the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle and he achieved this feat during his innings of 30 runs in the second innings.

Kane Williamson, who is also the leading run-scorer for them in Test cricket, had earlier scored 55 runs in the first innings. With a total of 85 runs in the first match of the series, Williamson now has 18,213 runs in 359 matches for the Kiwis. He is followed by Ross Taylor at number two with 18,199 and then Stephen Fleming at number three with 15,289.

Williamson, who led New Zealand to victory over India in the final of the 2021 World Test Championship, made his debut for the Kiwi team during the ODI match played against India in Dambulla on August 10, 2010. His Test debut was also against India in Ahmedabad on November 4, 2010 and he played his first T20 match against Zimbabwe in Harare on October 15, 2011. Williamson has scored 8828 runs in 101 Tests for New Zealand and has 6810 and 2575 runs in 165 ODIs and 93 T20 matches.

He was also the captain of the New Zealand team that reached the finals of the 2019 ODI World Cup and the 2021 T20 World Cup, but on both occasions he had to face defeat. Now Williamson is playing as a player and he also made an important contribution in the ongoing first Test against Sri Lanka. If we talk about this Test, the team led by Tim Southee managed to take a lead of 35 runs in the first innings and needs 275 runs in the fourth innings to win the match.
