Big upset in Pakistan cricket, this former cricketer can become all-format head coach in place of Gillespie

According to the report, Aaqib Javed can become the head coach of all formats of Pakistan in place of Jason Gillespie. Gillespie is currently the head coach of Pakistan's Test team and is also the interim coach of the limited overs cricket team for the tour of Australia.

According to a report by ESPN Cricinfo, the appointment of Aaqib Javed as coach is likely to be announced on Monday, when Pakistan plays Australia in the third T20 International. Pakistan has won the ODI series 2-1, but Australia is currently leading 2-0 in the T20 International series. In this situation, the Australia tour will prove to be Jason Gillespie's last assignment as head coach. In October 2024, the Pakistan Cricket Board made Aaqib a part of its selection committee.

Aaqib was not the PCB's first choice for the role of head coach as the board wanted Gillespie to take over as coach of all formats till the end of the Champions Trophy 2025. He was asked to take charge of the limited overs cricket team without making any changes to his existing contract. Gillespie did not accept the offer which led the PCB to search for an all-format coach.

The PCB had initially considered appointing Azhar Mahmood or Saqlain Mushtaq as the head coach, but neither of them received enough support from the PCB's advisory board, leading to the board offering the position to Aaqib. . He will hold this role until the end of the Champions Trophy 2025.

Gillespie began his tenure as red-ball coach with a 2–0 home defeat against Bangladesh in the Tests, but things turned around as England beat England 2–1 in the three-match Test series. Following Kirsten's resignation, he was appointed as the interim limited overs cricket team coach for the tour of Australia.
