Blumhouse has officially announced a major update on the current status of its Dead by Daylight movie, which has been in development since 2023. The live-action adaptation is based on Behaviour Interactive’s popular horror video game series.

What’s the new update for the Dead by Daylight movie?

According to THR, Blumhouse has finally found the writers who will pen the live-action movie’s screenplay. David Leslie Johnston-McGoldrick (The Conjuring: Last Rites) and Alexandre Aja (Never Let Go) have been tapped to join the horror movie, which will be produced by James Wan. This marks Johnston-McGoldrick’s latest collaboration with Wan, after previously working together on the Conjuring Universe and Insidious franchise. Further details about its plot and characters are still under wraps. At the moment, the live-action adaptation has no director and release date attached to it yet.

“What David and Alexandre bring to Dead by Daylight is a rare balance of character driven storytelling and relentless genre intensity,” Blumhouse boss Jason Blum said in a statement. “Drawing from survival horror and psychological terror, their work establishes a world where fear is not just experienced, but earned. It is a cinematic blueprint designed to attract a director who can elevate that vision through performance and scale.”

Dead By Daylight is an online multiplayer horror game that was first created in 2016. It requires a team of four players who must try to escape from a player-controlled killer, who wants to sacrifice them for a villain called “The Entity.” It has featured many iconic characters and locations from popular horror franchises such as Freddy Krueger, Michael Myers, Chucky, Ghostface, and more. Since its launched, the video game has also garnered over 60 million players over the years.

Behaviour executive Stephen Mulrooney added, “Alexandre and David are two modern masters of horror, and their script celebrates a dark distinction, Dead by Daylight is a game, its world is a nightmare. We look forward to working with a director who appreciates the depth of their story, and cannot wait to see their visceral vision brought to life.”
