BMC Budget 2026: Rs 4,248 crore education outlay tabled before elected corporators after four years

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation on Wednesday, February 25, presented its Budget for 2026–27, marking the first time in four years that the civic budget was tabled before newly elected corporators following the long-delayed municipal polls.

BMC Mayor Ritu Tawde and Municipal Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani presented the education budget, with a total allocation of Rs 4,248 crore for the sector. This is Rs 292 crore higher than the previous year’s allocation, as per News18 Marathi.

Capex, revenue and focus areas

Revenue generation and expenditure worth over Rs 3,844 crore have been proposed, while capital expenditure in education is pegged at around Rs 440 crore. The budget aims to strengthen school infrastructure, enhance digital learning and support teacher training initiatives.

A sum of Rs 2.40 crore has been earmarked for teacher training programmes aligned with NEP 2020. School libraries will receive Rs 5 crore to upgrade infrastructure and add academic and competitive exam materials.

Support for students and cultural initiatives

Financial assistance of Rs 25,000 or tuition fees (whichever is higher) will be provided to meritorious Class 10 students scoring above 90% from BMC schools affiliated with boards such as CBSE, ICSE, IB and Cambridge. Rs 19 lakh has been allocated for this scheme.

To promote cultural education, Rs 1 crore has been set aside for primary schools and Rs 35 lakh for secondary schools to procure musical instruments including harmoniums, tablas and keyboards.

Building on Mission SAMPURN, the BMC also announced Mission SAFAL for the upcoming academic year, aimed at integrating co-curricular activities with academic learning for holistic development.

Municipal Commissioner Gagrani is expected to table the overall budget before the Standing Committee at 2 pm and address the media at 3:30 pm.
