BMC elections: Congress’s alliance with Prakash Ambedkar’s party, VBA will contest on 62 seats.

Mumbai, 28 December. Ahead of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections, Congress has formed an alliance with Prakash Ambedkar’s party Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA). Under this alliance, Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi will contest elections on 62 seats out of total 227 and Congress will field its candidates on the remaining seats.

It is noteworthy that Congress had earlier announced to go alone in the BMC elections. But, as part of its strategy to form an effective alliance against BJP, it decided to forge an alliance with Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi.

Maharashtra Congress President Harshvardhan Sapkal made the official announcement of this alliance in Mumbai on Sunday. Officials of both the parties including Sachin Sawant from Congress and Dhairyavardhan Phundkar and Siddharth Mokale from VBA were present in the press conference.

Alliance formed after two and a half decades

Explaining the role behind this alliance, both the parties announced to unite against BJP. Also indicated that the relationship of Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi and Ambedkar family with Congress is getting stronger. When there was an organization named Bharip Bahujan Mahasangh (BBM), there was an alliance with Congress. This alliance has been formed again in 2025 after 25 years of 1999.

Remanent 28 Discussion on alliance in municipal corporations also

Leaders of both the parties said, ‘Congress and Vanchit are two close friends. Our common political agenda is to respect the Constitution. There may be differences of opinion, but not differences of hearts. Our role is kindness, equality and brotherhood. Party officials gave a strong message that there will be no compromise with the Constitution. It was also made clear in the press conference that discussions are going on regarding alliance in 28 other municipal corporations in the state.

This is not a game of numbers but a combination of ideas

Congress state president Harshvardhan Sapkal said, “Since the alliance was announced on the foundation day of Congress, it is considered to have special political significance. This is not a game of numbers but a combination of ideas. Because of the courage shown by Dhairyavardhan ji, we have also become ‘Harshvardhan’.”

Targeted at BJP

On this occasion, state vice president of Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi Dhairyavardhan Phundkar said, ‘If this alliance had been formed in 2014 itself, BJP would not have been at the throat of the country. Anyway, today this mail has come together to stop BJP. We officially announce that Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi will contest elections in alliance on 62 seats in Mumbai.

Meanwhile, Siddharth Mokale said, ‘Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi will contest on 62 out of total 227 seats in Mumbai Municipal Corporation elections. An agreement has been reached on seat sharing between both the parties. However, how many seats Congress will contest in this alliance is still a secret. There are indications that the Congress is in talks with other like-minded parties, especially the NCP (SP). It is expected to become clear after the talks on how many seats Congress will contest.

Prakash Ambedkar approved the decision

Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi has recently issued an official statement. It said that Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi will field its candidates on 62 out of total 227 seats of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, while Congress will contest on the remaining seats. The special thing is that the list of these 62 seats has been signed by big leaders of both the parties. It has been made clear that there will be no change in this decision. Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi President Prakash Ambedkar approved this decision through an online meeting.

It is noteworthy that voting for the elections of 29 municipal corporations including Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) will be held on January 15 and counting will take place on January 16.
