BNP’s victory in Bangladesh: Nazrul Islam Khan said – thanks India for recognizing the election results.
Dhaka. Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Friday thanked India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for recognizing the results of the country’s general elections and expressed hope that relations between the two countries will strengthen during the tenure of the new government. BNP standing committee member and chief coordinator of the 2026 elections Nazrul Islam Khan said the party appreciates Modi’s recognition of the mandate.
He said, “We thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi for congratulating our leader Tariq Rehman. It is a good thing for a democratic country to recognize the people’s decision and Narendra Modi has done this. We thank him.” Khan said, “We also thank him on behalf of our party and we believe that under the leadership of our leader Tariq Rehman, relations between these two countries and their people will strengthen.”
Earlier, Modi on Friday congratulated BNP leader Tariq Rahman on his “decisive victory” in Bangladesh’s parliamentary elections, saying he looked forward to working with him to advance the common goals of development. The Prime Minister said that this victory has shown the confidence of the people of Bangladesh in the leadership of Rahman.
Modi said, “India will continue its support for a democratic, progressive and inclusive Bangladesh.” I look forward to working with you to strengthen our multi-faceted relations and advance our shared development goals.” The BNP won a two-thirds majority in the 300-member Parliament in the elections held on February 12. This is the first parliamentary election in Bangladesh after the student-led protests in 2024. Due to this demonstration, former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had to step down from power.
Although the Election Commission of Bangladesh (EC) is yet to formally announce the election results, according to unofficial figures and projections circulated by local media, BNP and its allies have won over 210 seats while Jamaat-e-Islami has emerged as the main opposition. This is a big political comeback for BNP which was in opposition for years. Rahman, who returned to Bangladesh after nearly 17 years in self-exile, contested elections from two constituencies and won.
