The victim, Chaitanya Govind Kanhaiya (38), hails from Uttar Pradesh and currently resides in Mumbai’s Oshiwara area. He is a lyricist and musician. In December 2025, he met accused Premlal Mehta through an acquaintance. Mehta convinced Kanhaiya that he could get Kailash Kher to record his song.

Believing the words of the accused, Kanhaiya transferred as much as Rs 3.25 lakh to the bank account of a woman named Neeta Saraikar as per his instructions. After receiving the money, Mehta stopped contacting the victim. When pressed by Kanhaiya, the accused gave a check on January 5, which later bounced. When the victim directly contacted Kailash Kher’s manager, it was revealed that the entire case was a pure hoax.
