Bollywood vs South: Who won and who suffered the loss in the box office clash?
New Delhi . The competition between South and Hindi films at the box office has been seen year after year. Sometimes a film had to suffer huge losses and sometimes a South film gave a blow to the power of a Bollywood star. In 2024 and the last few years, there have been many such occasions when Hindi and South films came face to face, and the audience is curious as to who won the clash.
First of all let’s talk about Sarfira and Indian 2. Akshay Kumar’s ‘Sarfira’ and Kamal Haasan’s ‘Indian 2’ were released on July 12, 2024. Both the films did not perform as expected at the box office. Although Indian 2 had a budget of around Rs 250 crore, it suffered huge losses and was declared a disaster.
After this, on 15 August 2024, Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor’s film Stree 2 and Tamil film Thangaalan gave another clash. In this clash, ‘Stree 2’ earned handsomely and won at the box office, while Thangaalan was a flop.
Sunny Deol’s Gadar 2 and Rajinikanth’s Jailer also joined the clash. There was a difference of only one day in the release of both the films, Jailer was released on 10th August and Gadar 2 was released on 11th August 2024. In this clash, both the films proved to be blockbusters at the box office and the audience liked both the films.
Another great example of the collision between Bollywood and South is Shahrukh Khan’s Zero and Kannada star Yash’s KGF. Both the films were released on 21 December 2018, but Zero was a complete flop in front of KGF. Yash’s KGF was a hit at the box office and was loved by the audience.
Similarly, there was a clash between Shahrukh’s Dinky and Prabhas starrer Salaar. Donkey released on 21 December and Salaar on 22 December 2023. Both the films were commercial hits, but director Prashant Neel admitted that releasing with Shahrukh also resulted in loss for him.
It is clear from these examples that the box office clash is always exciting, sometimes South films win and sometimes Bollywood. Audience choice and star power both play a big role. Also, the right choice of release date and the strength of the content of the film decides who will win and who will lag behind.
