Bollywood has witnessed many films that have shattered box office records, but others have been so disastrous that their memory lingers long after their release. Today, we’re talking about one such film that starred A-listers like Abhishek Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Priyanka Chopra, and Kay Kay Menon, but still failed so miserably at the box office that it couldn’t even recover its production cost. Despite featuring a popular superhero storyline with Abhishek Bachchan in the lead, this film became one of his biggest flops. Can you guess which film we are talking about?

This film was made with Rs 45 crore, it earned just Rs…

Today we are talking about the film The Legend of Dronareleased in 2008 and directed by Goldie Behl. The film marked the first time Abhishek and Jaya Bachchan portrayed mother and son on screen, adding to the buzz and anticipation. Unfortunately, the film failed to meet expectations and turned out to be a huge disappointment.

The visual effects in Drona were crafted by EyeQube, a prominent VFX studio led by Charles Darby and David Bush. The team aimed to create a visually striking experience, featuring a variety of traditional Indian martial arts like Kalaripayattu, Chhau, Gatka, and sword fighting. These styles were incorporated into the film’s action scenes to give the movie an authentic and dynamic edge, celebrating India’s martial arts culture.

A dedicated group of 60 VFX experts worked for over six months to bring these complex effects to life. They were supported by a larger team of 250 professionals, including artists, animators, designers, and developers, all contributing to the visual enhancement of the film. The effort was significant, considering that Bollywood hadn’t yet seen such a large-scale superhero film relying heavily on VFX and action sequences.

However, despite the immense technical work, the film ultimately failed to deliver on its promise. The special effects, while impressive, could not overcome the film’s weaknesses in other areas such as the weak storyline unconvincing performances, and lack of solid direction. The movie’s reliance on its visuals and action sequences fell short of creating a compelling narrative, resulting in Drona earning less than Rs 15 crore at the box office—far below its Rs 45 crore production cost. This outcome made it one of the biggest commercial failures in Bollywood, despite the significant investment in its visual effects.
