Bombay HC clears ‘Matka King’ title row, Vijay Varma series to stream
The Bombay High Court granted Roy Kapur Productions legal relief in its ongoing lawsuit over the title of its web series Mother King. The development cleared the path for the Vijay Varma-led series to continue streaming on Prime Video.
According to the court documents Ms. Tanuja Bhagat filed a lawsuit together with an interim application to challenge the use of the title Mother King in the upcoming show. She claimed that she owned the title and requested immediate legal protection to stop the producers from using the title and distributing the series.
The plaintiff asserted that the web series derived its content from her deceased grandfather Kalyanji Bhagat whom she claimed to be the original “Mother King.” The project had been produced without her authorization according to further allegations.
The case was presented to Justice Sharmila Deshmukh at the Bombay High Court on April 15, 2026. The court denied interim relief after both parties presented their arguments which included Roy Kapur Productions and the other defendants who planned to release the series.

The court hearing scheduled for April 20 received information from the plaintiff’s lawyers that they planned to withdraw the lawsuit. The court disposed of both the lawsuit and the temporary request after the parties involved had withdrawn their case. Matka King stopped its legal battle after that point and continued to stream its content without any breaks.
The series officially premiered on Prime Video on April 17, 2026. The eight-episode period drama which Nagraj Popatrao Manjule directed and Abhay Koranne created depicts 1960s Bombay as the setting for Brij Bhatti’s rise who Vijay Varma portrays as a cotton trader who transforms the underground Matka gambling game into a national sensation.
Saie Tamhankar plays the role of Bhatti’s spouse Barkha while Kritika Kamra portrays Gulrukh and Gulshan Grover plays merchant Laljibhai. The ensemble cast further includes Siddharth Jadhav, Jamie Lever, Girish Kulkarni and Bharat Jadhav.
The digital release Mother King which Roy Kapur Films produced through Siddharth Roy Kapur and Nagraj Manjule and Gargi Kulkarni and Ashish Aryan and Ashwini Sidwani has received recognition as one of the significant digital releases in the current month, because the recent court decision guarantees its continued operation.
