In this film, Varun Dhawan is playing the character of Major Hoshiar Singh, whose bravery stories everyone wants to know.

In this film, Varun Dhawan will be seen playing the role of Major Hoshiar Singh Dahiya of 3 Grenadiers. Major Hoshiar Singh Dahiya has been awarded Paramvir Chakra for his bravery. Hoshiar Singh had recalled many incidents that happened during the war in an old interview. He had told how he fought even after being injured. Second Lieutenant Arun Khetarpal was martyred in this war. The film ‘Ikkis’ based on Arun’s life has been released this month.
Who was Major Hoshiar Singh?
In the interview, Hoshiar Singh had narrated the story of the battle of Basantar. Many Pakistani tanks were destroyed in this war and many soldiers were martyred. He told that he was given the task of coming to the border of Pakistan and building a bridge on Basantar River. This bridge was 20 kilometers from the border. They were ordered to capture Jarpal village, which was occupied by the Pakistani Army. They had prepared landmines and ammunition around this area.
How was the entire mission successful?
They had to cross and capture the village on 15th December at 10 pm. Despite all the difficulties, that area was captured by 12 o’clock in the night. The enemy army was not allowing the Indian Army to capture this place. But still the Indian Army tried its best to capture it.

About 350 soldiers were martyred
Major Hoshiar had further told that on 16-17 December, Pakistan sent more of its army and started attacking the Indian Army from two sides. Tanks surrounded one side and infantry were attacking from the other side. He told that ‘in this also he took a big beating. 300-350 soldiers of Pakistani Army were martyred. Pakistan Army’s tanks were also destroyed in this battle. Hoshiar said that he collected the bodies of 97 Pakistani soldiers who were handed over to him. He was injured in this fight.
Hoshiar’s retirement and demise
He further said that on December 18, a brigade commander from Pakistan came waving the white flag. He asked for the dead bodies of Pakistani soldiers and announced that they were now retreating. During this time a ceasefire had been announced by both the governments. Hoshiar Singh retired from the Indian Army in 1988. He died in 1998 at the age of 61.
Varun met Hoshiar Singh’s wife
‘Border 2’ will hit the theaters on January 23, before Republic Day. During the promotion of the film, Varun Dhawan also met Major Hoshiar Singh’s wife and son. Sitting at the feet of his wife Dhano Devi, Varun bowed to her and also talked to his son.
