Bradley Beal takes big risk by declining player option with Clippers

In the midst of a chaotic day of news and reports in the NBA, Bradley Beal reportedly decided to decline his $5.6 million player option with the Los Angeles Clippers for next season.

Beal’s decision to test the open market comes as a surprise due to his recent injury history.

While it’s possible he could agree to a new deal with the Clippers, dropping Beal from their book opens up more salary-cap space for a Los Angeles franchise that could be on the verge of a total rebuild.

Bradley Beal’s market value is at its lowest point in years

Beal, 33, may still believe he has value around the league as a former three-time All-Star, but he was only able to play in six games during the 2025-26 season before enduring surgery to repair a hip fracture. But prior to his injury, Beal was viewed as a cheap veteran addition with a high ceiling by a then-veteran-laden Clippers team looking for a skilled scorer off the bench.

Beal signed a two-year, $11 million contract with Los Angeles that included a player option in the second year on July 18th, 2025. A career 24.1 points-per-game scorer, Beal was coming off two of the worst seasons of his career in his two years with the Phoenix Suns, who eventually relegated Beal to a bench role.

The last season Beal reached 60 games played was back in the 2020-21 campaign with the Washington Wizards.
