Sonam Wangchuk Detention Revoke: Home Ministry revokes Sonam Wangchuk’s detention with immediate effect, NSA also removed

Sonam Wangchuk case: Ladakh activist Sonam Wangchuk was detained under the National Security Act, but the Home Ministry, in exercise of powers under the National Security Act, has decided to cancel the detention of Sonam Wangchuk with immediate effect. This decision is a big relief for Wangchuk.

In fact, Sonam Wangchuk was detained on September 26, 2025, two days after violent protests demanding statehood and Sixth Schedule status to Ladakh. Later he was shifted to Jodhpur. Four people died and 90 were injured in this protest in the Union Territory. The government had accused him of inciting violence.

What did the Home Ministry say?

On the decision to cancel the custody of Sonam Wangchuk, the Home Ministry said in its statement, ‘In the backdrop of the serious law and order situation that arose in the peaceful city of Leh on 24 September 2025, for the purpose of maintaining public order, Shri Sonam Wangchuk was taken into custody under the provisions of the National Security Act (NSA) on 26 September 2025, under an order issued by the District Magistrate of Leh. Shri Sonam Wangchuk has already completed almost half of his period of detention under the said Act.

The press release issued by the Home Ministry said- ‘The government is actively engaging with various stakeholders and community leaders in Ladakh to address the aspirations and concerns of the people of the region. However, the current environment of bandhs and protests has been detrimental to the peace-loving nature of the society, and has adversely affected various sections of the community—including students, job seekers, businessmen, tour operators, tourists and the overall economy.’

The ministry further said, ‘The government is committed to creating an environment of peace, stability and mutual trust in Ladakh, so as to promote constructive and meaningful dialogue with all concerned parties. In furtherance of this objective, and after due consideration, the Government, in exercise of the powers conferred by the National Security Act, has decided to terminate the detention of Shri Sonam Wangchuk with immediate effect.’

‘The government reiterates its commitment to provide all necessary security measures to Ladakh. It hopes that issues related to the region will be resolved through constructive engagement and dialogue, including through the high-level committee arrangement as well as other appropriate forums.’
