British tourist smashes check-in kiosks at Hong Kong airport

A 35-year-old British tourist has been arrested after he damaged several self-service check-in kiosks at the Hong Kong International Airport.

Footage of the incident, which took place on Monday morning near Aisle J in Terminal 1, shows the man knocking the machines over and smashing them with a metal pole. Bystanders were seen quickly moving away from the scene, according to People.

The man, who reportedly arrived in Hong Kong last November, was later detained at the bus unloading area at the airport.

He was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and possession of Viagra without a doctor’s prescription, an offense in Hong Kong that carries a maximum penalty of two years in prison and a HK$100,000 (US$12,800) fine, as reported by the Hong Kong Free Press.

He reportedly arrived at the airport emotionally unstable and was trying to buy a plane ticket before the outburst.

Hong Kong Airport Authority said staff were deployed to manage the situation and backup kiosks were set up.

“Passengers may also use other kiosks or check in manually at airline counters, and airport operations remain unaffected,” it said, as quoted by The Telegraph.
