Difference Between BS-3 and BS-4: Delhi’s air has once again reached critical condition. What is BS and why is it important?
BS stands for Bharat Stage Emission Standard. These rules decide how much harmful gases a vehicle’s engine will release into the air. These standards were implemented in the year 2000, so that pollution caused by vehicles could be controlled. These were implemented by the CPCB under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. As pollution increased with time, the rules also became stricter.
Why were the BS stages changed?
The number of vehicles in the country increased rapidly, traffic increased and with it the air became more poisonous. For this reason, the government decided that the emission rules would be made more stringent every few years. This is the reason why the journey from BS-1 to today’s BS-6 was covered.

These stages were implemented at different times in India
- BS-1: 1 April 2000
- BS-2: 2001
- BS-3: 2005
- BS-4: April 2017
- BS-6: April 2020 (existing standard)
In each new stage, the limits for gases like carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide and particulate matter were further reduced.
What is the difference between BS-3 and BS-4?
BS-3 vehicles cause more pollution as per today’s standards, hence the strictest measures are being taken regarding them. Whereas BS-4 vehicles emit relatively less smoke and are considered slightly better for the environment. BS-6 is the strictest and most modern standard to which all new vehicles in India currently come.
What does the new order of the Supreme Court say?
The Supreme Court has made a major change in its old order regarding vehicles in Delhi-NCR. According to this new decision given on the request of CAQM, now only BS-4 and newer vehicles will be allowed to run in Delhi-NCR. Entry of BS-3 and older vehicles has been banned and can also be seized.

How many vehicles will be affected?
Statistics show that the impact will be huge
- Gurugram: More than 1.5 lakh BS-3 vehicles
- Noida: More than 1.40 lakh BS-3 vehicles
- Ghaziabad: More than 3.70 lakh BS-3 vehicles
All of them will be banned from traveling in Delhi.
What it means for common people
If your car is BS-3 or older, then it may be difficult to drive it in Delhi. The decision is certainly strict, but the aim is clean air and better health. This is being considered a bitter but necessary step to deal with the poisonous air of Delhi.
