BSNL to Launch Affordable Plans Bundled with Netflix, Amazon Prime: A Potential Game-Changer
State-owned telecom operator BSNL is reportedly preparing to disrupt the market with new recharge plans bundled with premium OTT services like Netflix and Amazon Primeaiming to compete directly with private players such as Jio and Airtel. Currently, BSNL is the only major telecom operator in India not offering plans that include these popular streaming platforms.
BSNL Plans to Bring Premium OTT Services
During the recent AskBSNL initiativea user inquired about mobile prepaid plans bundled with Netflix and Amazon Prime. In response, the Director of CM, BSNLconfirmed that while some existing plans include OTT services, the company is evaluating the feasibility of adding Netflix and Amazon Prime to their offerings.
- Netflix is considered the most premium OTT platform in India, offering high-quality content at relatively higher subscription costs.
- Amazon Primeon the other hand, provides exceptional value with a comprehensive suite of benefits, including Prime Video, Prime Music, Prime Reading, and shopping perks, making it highly attractive for Indian consumers.
The potential addition of these services to BSNL’s recharge plans could position the operator as a serious competitor to Jio and Airtel, which already include similar offerings in their plans.
eSIM Launch and Subscriber Growth
BSNL is also working to introduce the much-anticipated eSIM facility for its customers, with a launch expected around March 2025. This move is part of BSNL’s broader strategy to modernize its services and cater to tech-savvy consumers.
The state-owned operator has recently seen remarkable growth, adding over 5.5 million new subscribers since July 2024. This surge comes on the heels of tariff hikes by private telecom operators such as Jio, Airtel, and Vi, which saw mobile rates increase by up to 15%. In contrast, BSNL continues to offer some of the most affordable plans in India, with no immediate plans to raise prices.
Challenges for Private Operators
As customers flock to BSNL for its budget-friendly options, private telecom operators are banking on the hope that many subscribers will return, citing potential challenges BSNL might face in maintaining customer service standards. However, BSNL is actively working to improve its offerings and strengthen its position in the competitive market.
