BSP’s voice may disappear from Parliament in 2026, there will be ‘zero’ tenure for the first time in 36 years

Uttar Pradesh:Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) has been making its presence felt in Indian politics for a long time, but now for the first time in 2026, it may not have any membership in the Parliament. This is posing a big political challenge for the party, because not only have its seats in the Lok Sabha become zero, but the way is clear for the BSP to have no representation in the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections, due to which its voice in the Parliament will almost be lost.

Ramji Gautam’s tenure ends

BSP’s only MP Ramji Gautam is completing his tenure in Rajya Sabha in 2026. Ramji Gautam, elected with BJP support in 2019, will be out of Parliament after the end of his six-year term. With this, BSP’s representation in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha houses will become ‘zero’, which is going to happen for the first time in the history of the party.

Why is BSP’s political status declining?

BSP has once been a major party in Uttar Pradesh politics, but its performance at the parliamentary and assembly levels has declined in the last few elections. The party did not win any seats in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, due to which its presence in Parliament had already ended. With the end of Ramji Gautam’s tenure, BSP’s political presence will become even weaker.

Big scenario of Rajya Sabha elections

In the year 2026, elections are to be held on about 75 Rajya Sabha seats across the country, out of which 10 seats will be vacant from Uttar Pradesh alone. The balance of power between NDA and opposition may change in these elections. At present, BSP has only one MLA in the UP Assembly, due to which it seems very difficult for it to win any Rajya Sabha seat.

NDA currently has 129 seats in the Rajya Sabha while the opposition has 78. The results of the upcoming elections will decide which alliance will dominate the Upper House. In this environment, it has become more challenging for a small party like BSP to maintain its hold.

Without Parliament, future of BSP

According to political analysts, the loss of representation in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha houses will weaken the BSP’s voice in national politics. The party will have to re-establish its position strongly in the elections to be held in 2027 or thereafter, otherwise it will not be able to register its presence in Parliament for a long time.
