The team of Gujarat Titans (GT), which debuted in the 2022 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), has reached the playoffs 3 times. He won the title in his very first season. After this GT traveled to the finals in 2023. However, as soon as Hardik Pandya left, the team looked scattered in the 2024 season.

Under the captaincy of Shubman Gill, GT finished eighth after winning 5 out of 14 matches. GT made a strong comeback in IPL 2025 and won 7 out of its first 8 matches. The team looked to be a strong contender for the title but lost momentum in the last stage of the tournament.

GT lost in eliminator

GT lost both its last matches of the league stage, due to which it could not reach the top-2 and had to play eliminator. He faced Mumbai Indians in the eliminator. GT entered this match without Jos Buttler. Butler had scored 538 runs in 13 innings at a strike rate of 163.03. In such a situation, his absence was a big blow for GT.

The dates of the tournament were postponed due to the military conflict between India and Pakistan, due to which Jos Buttler returned to England for national duty. In his absence, GT could reach only 208 while chasing the target of 229 runs in the Eliminator and was eliminated.

This time there are more problems

Last season, GT’s strength was its top-3 batsmen. The trio of Gill-Buttler and Sai Sudarshan had crossed the 500-500 run mark. Apart from this, Sharfan Ruthford had scored 291 runs in 11 innings in the middle order at a strike rate of 157.29. Thanks to these batsmen, GT had easily made it to the playoffs but this time its path seems difficult.

Shubman Gill lost his place in India’s T20 World Cup squad due to poor form. Whereas Butler could score only 87 runs in 8 innings in T20 World Cup 2026. Buttler-Gill are the pillars of GT’s batting. The form of both of them remains a cause of concern for the team management. Apart from this, it remains to be seen who GT will give a chance to replace Rutherford.

Rutherford was traded by GT to MI. He can be replaced by Jason Holder, who is in good form. However, the most important thing for GT will be the form of Butler-Gill. If her bat does not work then she can stay away from the title again.
