Buy EVs, Get Upto Rs. 4 Lakh Discount

The Telangana government has launched an aggressive new policy to push electric vehicle adoption, and it is starting with its own workforce. In a unique move, the state has negotiated direct bulk discounts with multiple electric vehicle manufacturers specifically for its employees.

This state negotiated model allows government staff to receive up to a 20 percent discount on the purchase of new electric two wheelers and four wheelers. For buyers looking at premium electric cars, these discounts can translate into massive upfront savings of up to Rs 4 lakh per family.

Instead of relying solely on complex government subsidies, Telangana has bypassed the traditional route by directly partnering with original equipment manufacturers.

The state has already finalized agreements with major brands including Mahindra Electric, Ola Electric, Ather Energy, and Gravton Motors. Discussions are also currently underway with Tata EV to expand the range of available options.

This approach is designed to provide immediate, tangible price cuts at the dealership level. The program is expected to benefit over five lakh government employees, turning them into early adopters of electric mobility without placing any direct subsidy burden on the state treasury.

The financial impact of these partnerships is significant when looking at actual retail prices. For an electric car priced around Rs 20 lakh ex showroom, the 20 percent manufacturer discount immediately knocks off Rs 4 lakh from the invoice.

For electric two wheelers, which typically cost between Rs 1 lakh and Rs 1.5 lakh, buyers can expect a direct reduction of roughly Rs 20,000 to Rs 30,000 before any other state benefits are applied.

The institutional discount is just one part of a broader push to electrify the state. The Telangana government already offers a 100 percent exemption on road tax and registration fees for all categories of electric vehicles, including private cars, commercial goods carriers, and tractors. This policy remains valid for a two year period until December 31, 2026, and places no cap on the number of vehicles that can be registered under the scheme.

When combined with the new manufacturer discount, the final on road price drops drastically. A standard road tax levy in the state ranges from 12 to 15 percent depending on the vehicle category. Waiving this completely saves a buyer another Rs 2.4 lakh to Rs 3 lakh on a premium electric SUV. This dual benefit structure effectively eliminates the traditional price gap between electric models and their petrol or diesel equivalents.

To support this anticipated influx of new electric vehicles, the state is mandating the installation of charging infrastructure at all key government locations. The initial phase includes setting up fast chargers across all 33 district collectorate offices. Private establishments like malls, hotels, and commercial complexes are also being encouraged to set up charging stations through specialized commercial electricity tariffs.

Telangana currently has over 1.5 crore registered vehicles, but electric models only account for roughly 1.7 lakh units. The state is actively working to change this ratio. The Chief Minister has issued a directive that all future vehicle procurements for government departments must be strictly electric. Furthermore, the state transport corporation is replacing older diesel models, having recently deployed dozens of new electric buses for inter city routes across the state.
