Cabinet set to approve proposal to rename Kerala as Keralam

The Union Cabinet is set to consider a long-pending proposal to officially rename Kerala as Keralamaligning the state’s constitutional name with its traditional Malayalam pronunciation and cultural identity.

Why the Name Change to Keralam?

In Malayalam — the official language of the state — Kerala is naturally called Keralam. The demand to update the English/Hindi constitutional spelling has been raised for over a decade, reflecting pride in linguistic heritage and the historical “Akhanda Keralam” (united Kerala) vision from the freedom struggle era.

The Kerala Legislative Assembly unanimously passed resolutions on this matter multiple times:

  • First in August 2023 (returned by the Centre for technical corrections)
  • Again in June 2024with refinements under Article 3 of the Indian Constitution, requesting an amendment to the First Schedule.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has strongly backed the move, emphasizing that “Keralam” better represents the state’s identity in its native tongue.
