Café chain The Providore shuts all Singapore outlets after 13 years

Singaporean café chain and grocer The Providore has closed all its stores across the city-state after 13 years in operation.

The brand said in an Instagram post that it would shut down from Monday without disclosing any reason.

“Thank you for your long-term support and kindness,” it said. “Partings come, but flavour and memories last forever. We look forward to meeting you again in another form in the future.”

A notice posted at the entrance of one of its outlets said the company was “taking steps to wind up the business,” as reported by The Business Times.

It also directed anyone with inquiries to contact a representative from liquidation firm ClearView Associates.

The shutdown appeared to have been abrupt. Mothership reported that employees were only informed about the closure when they arrived for work on Monday morning. Staff also said many of the products in the stores seemed to have been cleared out overnight.

Toh Hwee Tin, supervising lead of the National Trades Union Congress’s hospitality and consumer business cluster, said the union is reaching out to affected members and will offer support and resources where needed.

Founded in 2013, The Providore was one of the early players in the city-state’s cafe scene. It later gained popularity among office workers for its brunch dishes and upscale retail selection, which included cheeses, baked goods and grocery items.

The brand was sold to new investors last April and its founder exited the business. The new owners said at the time that they intended to develop the brand further by introducing fresh concepts and experiences, according to Channel News Asia.

In recent times, however, the chain had been scaling back. Before shutting down, it operated six outlets in Singapore and a warehouse with a retail section offering gourmet food, wine, beer, spirits and custom gift items.
