Kolkata, 21 May. The Calcutta High Court on Thursday ordered a fresh investigation into the alleged destruction of evidence and the family’s specific allegations in the case of rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College about 21 months ago.
A bench of Justice Shampa Sarkar and Justice Tirthankar Ghosh directed that a three-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by the Joint Director (Eastern Zone) of CBI will conduct the investigation. That is, the CBI has been entrusted with the task of re-investigating the events that took place from the doctor’s dinner on that fateful night till his funeral the next evening.
The division bench of the High Court said that the decision on the remaining two members of the SIT will be taken within 48 hours of the court order. The bench said that considering the social impact of this horrific incident, a three-member SIT will investigate the allegations of destruction of evidence and allegations of the doctor’s parents trying to suppress and downplay the incident.
In the next hearing on June 25 Report has to be submitted to SIT
Under the order of the High Court, CBI has the right to interrogate anyone whom it deems necessary. Also, the SIT will thoroughly investigate the specific allegations made by the victim’s family. The court has asked the SIT to submit its report in the next hearing on June 25.
It is noteworthy that on the night of August 9, 2024, a young doctor was raped and murdered in the hospital, which created an uproar among the doctors community and common people across the country. Allegations were made that evidence was destroyed and attempts were made to downplay it immediately after the incident.
The parents of the deceased doctor had filed an application in the High Court demanding further investigation into the rape and murder of their daughter. He claimed that more than one person was involved in this horrific crime. On January 20, 2025, civilian volunteer Sanjay Roy was sentenced to life imprisonment in connection with this incident.
