Can India be out even after winning the next two matches? Understand where the problem lies
India had a very poor start in the Super 8 stage of the T20 World Cup 2026. In the first match held in Ahmedabad on 22 February, Team India was defeated by South Africa by 76 runs. Due to this defeat, not only did India fall down in the points table, but its net run rate also became very low. Only the top two teams from each Super 8 group will reach the semi-finals. Therefore, after this big defeat, it is now looking difficult for India to reach the semi-finals.
South Africa tops the points table in Group 1 of the T20 World Cup 2026 Super 8 with 2 points and a net run rate of +3.800. India are at the bottom with 0 points and a net run rate of -3.800. The remaining two teams West Indies and Zimbabwe will start their matches today, 23 February. This match will be played at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

Mathematics for Team India to reach the semi-finals
- If South Africa wins both its remaining matches and Team India defeats both West Indies and Zimbabwe, then South Africa can qualify with 6 points and India with 4 points. In such a situation, the remaining two teams will have maximum 2-2 points.
- India’s net run rate is very bad right now, so India will have to win both its matches by a big margin. Apart from this, if South Africa loses one of the next two matches, then the three teams can have 4-4 points. Then net run rate will be the deciding factor.
- If South Africa loses both the matches then Zimbabwe and West Indies will get points. If India wins both the matches then they can qualify with four points and the winning team among the remaining two teams will also advance with four points.
- If India wins just one match then the road will become very difficult. Qualification will completely depend on the results of other matches and net run rate.
