Canada Achieves Historic 6-0 Victory Over Qatar in World Cup 2026

Canada achieved a historic 6-0 victory against Qatar in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Group B match, marking their first-ever win in the tournament and setting multiple records. The match took place in Canada on June 19.

Striker Jonathan David scored a hat-trick, becoming only the second player to do so for a non-European or non-South American team in World Cup history, following the USA’s Bert Patenaude in 1930. David scored in the 29th minute, first-half stoppage time (45+3), and again in the 90+2 minute. He also joined Lionel Messi as one of the few players to score a hat-trick in the ongoing World Cup. Cyle Larin opened the scoring in the 16th minute.

Canada became the first team from outside Europe and South America to score five or more goals in a World Cup match. They dominated the game with 97 touches inside Qatar’s penalty box, the highest recorded since data tracking began in 1966. The team also matched the record for most shots on target in the first half with eight, equaling Romania’s performance against Argentina in 1994.

This victory made Canada the first host nation since Argentina in 1978 to score six goals in a World Cup match. Qatar struggled throughout the game, suffering defensive errors and playing with reduced numbers after two red cards.

Qatar became the first Asian team to receive two red cards in a World Cup match, according to OptaJose. This marked only the third instance since 1966 where a team had two players sent off within the first hour of a World Cup game, following the United States against Italy in 2006 and Uruguay against Germany in 1966.
