Canada and India Push for Reset as Strategic Dialogue Gains Momentum – Obnews

Canada and India are taking fresh steps to strengthen bilateral ties, building on recent momentum generated at the G20 Summit and a renewed commitment to dialogue and cooperation. The Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada hosted a series of high-level engagements in New Delhi from November 24 to 26, focusing on advancing economic, strategic, and diplomatic relations between the two countries.

The visit followed a joint statement issued at the G20 Summit, where Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi agreed to begin negotiations toward a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement. The proposed agreement is seen as a key pillar in expanding trade, boosting investment, and supporting long term economic collaboration between Canada and India.

Discussions in New Delhi centered on what participants described as a Canada India reset, aimed at restoring momentum and deepening cooperation across multiple sectors. Key themes included trade diversification, defence and security collaboration, energy partnerships, and emerging technology. These conversations were framed within a broader effort to align shared interests in the Indo Pacific region.

The week of dialogue brought together partners such as the Council for Strategic and Defence Research, the Ananta Aspen Centre, the Indo Canadian Business Chamber, the Canadian High Commission in India, and the India Canada Research Initiative. Together, participants explored policy pathways related to defence industrial cooperation, critical minerals diplomacy, and subnational partnerships that could support more resilient supply chains.

The discussions also set the stage for the future, following Prime Minister Carney’s formal acceptance of an invitation to visit India in early 2026. Speakers involved in the dialogue highlighted cautious optimism about the direction of the relationship, noting that sustained engagement and practical cooperation will be essential as Canada and India work toward a more integrated and forward looking partnership.
