Canadian PM Mark Carney reaches Mumbai: Will hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister Modi on March 2, know the complete schedule
Mumbai. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney arrived in Mumbai on Friday on his first official visit to India. Over the next two days, he is scheduled to meet Indian and Canadian CEOs, industry experts, innovators, academics and pension fund investment representatives. Carney will hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on March 2. This will be the third meeting between Carney and PM Modi in 10 months, reflecting efforts to improve India-Canada relations.
It also reflects efforts to defuse tensions that arose during the tenure of his predecessor Justin Trudeau following the killing of pro-Khalistani activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar outside a gurudwara in British Columbia in June 2023. The then Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had claimed that there was credible evidence linking Indian government agents to Nijjar’s death. New Delhi had termed this allegation as completely false.
It is noteworthy that due to this dispute, diplomats from both the countries were expelled and the diplomatic confrontation continued for a long time. In the year 2024, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) claimed that agents of the Indian government were linked to violent crimes in Canada, including making death threats and involvement in murders. Carney’s visit to India is an important step in the ongoing efforts to strengthen bilateral relations and strategic cooperation.
Will meet PM Modi at Hyderabad House
The highlight of Carney’s visit will be delegation-level talks at Hyderabad House, a formal follow-up to previous talks held in Kananaskis and Johannesburg in 2025. His delegation-level talks with PM Modi are scheduled on March 2 at Hyderabad House. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the objective of these talks is to review the India-Canada strategic partnership in various sectors including energy, critical minerals and research and to align government policies with the interests of the private sector through the India-Canada CEO Forum.
