Car, bike owners to pay double parking charges in Delhi: Here’s why

In a bid to combat the rising pollution levels in Delhi with the onset of winter season, the New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) is set to double parking charges across the capital. This move is aimed at encouraging residents to opt for public transportation over private vehicles, according to a senior NDMC official, as reported by PTI. The revised parking rates, which are expected to be announced soon, will apply to both two-wheelers and four-wheelers.At present, the parking charges for Lutyens’ Delhi region have been increased, with other regions to follow soon.

New Delhi parking rates: Present parking charges

Currently, four-wheelers are charged Rs 20 per hour for surface parking, with a daily cap of Rs 100, while two-wheelers pay Rs 10 per hour. At multi level parking facilities, the charges are Rs 10 for up to four hours for cars, and Rs 5 for two-wheelers. With the proposed hike, these rates will effectively double.

While the NDMC is moving forward with the increase, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), which covers the majority of the city’s parking lots, has not yet implemented similar measures. The MCD’s proposal for a parking fee hike is still awaiting approval.
This decision comes as Delhi’s air quality has plummeted into the “very poor” category in recent days, with smog engulfing the city. In response, the city has activated Stage II of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), which includes restrictions on the use of coal and firewood in public eateries and a ban on diesel generators, except for essential services. Similar parking fee hikes were introduced last year under GRAP measures, following a similar drop in air quality in October. The NDMC hopes that this strategy will once again reduce traffic congestion and pollution in the capital.
