Six people were injured Monday when a car rammed into 13 vehicles and barreled into the yard of an apartment complex in Phu Nhuan District in Ho Chi Minh City.
Authorities identified the driver as 69-year-old Nguyen The Hien, who was traveling on Hoang Van Thu Street around 9 a.m. when his car suddenly veered into oncoming traffic near a hotel. Witnesses said eight motorbikes were thrown nearly 70 meters following the initial impact.
The vehicle then crashed through the yard of the Kingston Residence apartment complex, colliding with five cars before coming to a stop. The scene showed several motorbikes scattered across the road and debris strewn around the damaged cars in front of the building. The collision caused traffic congestion in the area, prompting officers to cordon off a 200-meter section of the roadway.
Mai Trinh, who witnessed the incident, said the car appeared to be traveling at high speed when it struck the other vehicles.
“It seemed the driver hit the wrong pedal, so the car did not stop after the first impact,” she said.
Hien reportedly sat in front of the apartment complex after the accident, appearing panicked and declining to answer questions. Police have taken him into custody for alcohol and drug testing.
A traffic department representative said preliminary information points to possible faulty brakes, compounded by the driver’s inability to safely navigate crowded streets. An examination of the car’s braking system is underway to determine the exact cause of the incident.
