Carry-On Cast Settles Christmas Movie Debate Around Action Thriller

Netflix’s Carry-On is out now on the streaming platform, and its cast recently settled the debate on whether or not the action movie is actually a Christmas movie or not.

The film, which stars Taron Egerton, Sofia Carson, Danielle Deadwyler, and Jason Bateman, takes place in Los Angeles International Airport on Christmas Eve, placing it in the same vain as movies like Die Hard. Speaking to News, Egerton, Carson, and Deadwyler all chime in on where the movie stands.

What did Carry-On’s cast say about the film’s Christmas movie status?

“I think so,” said Egerton. “I think it’s a Christmas film if it makes you feel like it’s Christmas. Die Hard makes me feel like it’s Christmas. So for that reason, I think it’s a Christmas film.”

Danielle Deadwyler was unsure if audiences would even be old enough to remember the debates that raged around Die Hard’s status as a Christmas movie, but did note that the film is a mix of both.

“Are people even gonna be old enough? A lot of people, generationally, are they gonna be able to be like, ‘Is this a Christmas movie? Is this an action movie?’ It is a Christmas and an action movie,” Deadwyler said.

Sofia Carson echoed Deadwyler’s comments, saying that the “Chrismaction” movie was a blend of genres, and likened it to Die Hard in how the film could be considered both.

“I think Carry-On is, as Danielle Dedwyler said, a ‘Christmaction’ movie just as Die Hard was,” said Carson. “It’s a Christmas movie and an action movie in one beautifully wrapped package.”

Egerton stars as Ethan Kopek, the TSA agent at the center of the story. Starring alongside Egerton is Jason Bateman, who plays the mysterious traveler who blackmails Kopek. Carry-On’s ensemble includes Sofia Carson, Danielle Deadwyler, Logan Marshall-Green, Josh Brener, Theo Rossi, Dean Norris, and Sinqua Walls. Also appearing in the film are Gil Perez-Abraham, Tonatiuh, Curtiss Cook, Joe Williamson, and Josh Brenner.

Carry-On is directed by Jaume Collet-Serra (Black Adam) from a screenplay by T.J. Fixman and Michael Green. Dylan Clark of Dylan Clark Productions serves as a producer. Executive producers are Holly Bario, Brian Williams, Jaume Collet-Serra, Seth William Meier, and Scott Greenberg.

First announced in 2022, Carry-On stems from Amblin Entertainment, Steven Spielberg’s production company. Spielberg and Amblin Partners signed a deal with Netflix in 2021 to produce multiple films for the streamer.
