Case registered against Mamata Banerjee in Kolkata, accused of inciting religious sentiments
Kolkata: Former Chief Minister of West Bengal and Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee is embroiled in a new legal dispute. An FIR has been registered against him at Hare Street police station in Kolkata. He has been accused of allegedly inciting religious sentiments and affecting social harmony through a speech given during a public meeting.
Matter related to 9 March 2026
According to the information, this matter is related to an event organized on March 9, 2026 in the Esplanade area of Kolkata. Mamata Banerjee addressed the people in this program organized under the banner of Dharma Manch. The program was organized in front of the Metro Channel outpost. The complainant claims that some of the comments in his speech could create tension in the society and increase distance between different communities.
The complaint in this case was lodged by Kolkata businessman Tushar Kanti Das. After investigating the initial complaint, the police converted it into a formal FIR. The complainant alleges that the language of the speech and some of its parts were such that they could create an atmosphere of fear and instability among the people.
FIR registered in Hare Street police station
According to police records, this FIR was registered at Hare Street police station on June 7, 2026 at 3:45 pm. The FIR number of the case is 0106 and registration number is 32712018260106. Police had received a written complaint in this regard, on the basis of which further action was initiated.
A case has been registered against Mamata Banerjee under several sections of the Indian Justice Code (BNS) 2023. These include Section 196(1), which deals with spreading enmity or hatred between different groups on grounds of religion, language, caste or other grounds. Apart from this, provisions related to criminal intimidation charges under Section 351(2) and activities related to deliberate instigation or breach of peace have been imposed under Section 352.
Mamata Banerjee did not respond
However, no official response has come yet from Mamata Banerjee or Trinamool Congress in this matter. The discussion regarding this FIR has intensified in the political circles and it is believed that this matter can become a big issue in the politics of West Bengal in the coming days. At present the police is investigating the matter and further legal process is going on based on the available facts.
