Hong Kong carrier Cathay Pacific issued an apology on Friday to passengers of two flights from Nepal to Hong Kong after a reported outbreak of food poisoning affected 36 individuals earlier this week.
The passengers, who were on board flights numbered CX640 on Tuesday and Wednesday, exhibited symptoms such as vomiting, nausea and abdominal pain shortly after their meals, according to the South China Morning Post.
Authorities pinpointed sandwiches served on the Wednesday flight as a potential source after 16 passengers fell ill within 10-30 minutes of consumption. Another 20 passengers from the Tuesday flight experienced similar symptoms, with in-flight meals being a common link.
A spokesperson for Cathay Pacific stated that the contamination originated from outside the airline’s direct operations. The carrier has committed to undertaking necessary corrective measures if the in-flight meals are confirmed as the source of the outbreak, the Bangkok Post reported.
The Center for Health Protection has initiated an investigation to determine if there is an epidemiological connection among the affected passengers.
