Caught taking bribe of Rs 30 thousand, when his house was raided, treasure worth crores was found.

Odisha Vigilance Department has caught and arrested a senior officer of the Mining Department red-handed in a bribery case. Along with this, more than Rs 4 crore cash has also been recovered from the officer’s flat. The Vigilance Department has claimed that this is the biggest cash seizure in the history of the state.

 

Debabrata Mohanty, posted as Deputy Director of Mines, Cuttack Circle, was caught by Odisha Vigilance while taking a bribe of Rs 30 thousand. He is accused of having asked for this money from a coal businessman in exchange for properly running the coal depot and allowing him to transport coal.

When the Vigilance team got information about this, they decided to catch the officer red handed. The Vigilance team laid a trap to catch the officer. They caught Debabrata Mohanty when he was taking a bribe of Rs 30 thousand. The Vigilance team seized the entire bribe amount from them.

 

How was the cash recovered?

When the Vigilance team arrested him taking bribe, suspicion increased on him. After this, Vigilance teams searched his flat in Bhubaneswar, ancestral house in Bhadrak and office in Cuttack. Papers of a two-storey house and documents of various properties including 130 grams of gold were found in his Bhubaneswar flat. After this, a trolley bag and more than Rs 4 crore in cash hidden in cupboards were recovered from their premises. The vigilance team also found Rs 1.2 lakh from his office drawer.

Register a case and start investigation

A two-storey 2400 square feet house in Bhubaneswar, about 130 grams of gold and more than Rs 4 crore in cash have been recovered from them. After this, the Vigilance team registered a case against him on February 23 under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018. The investigation against him is still going on and officials suspect that more assets may be unearthed.
